The Royal Australian Mint in conjunction with some Australian Newspapers released this coin as part of a 14 coin series called "Anzacs to Afghanistan". To get a coin you had to obtain a token from the newspaper and redeem it at a cost of $3.00. Different tokens were published each day for 2 weeks (hence 14 coins). The coins are commemorating 14 significant military moments that have shaped Australia over the past 100 years from World War 1 to the modern day. Ten of the 14 coins released in the series are 20 cent coins and four of them are 25 cent coins. They were issued in a collector card.

This 20 Cent coin remembers the attack on Darwin on 19th of February 1942 by 242 Japanese bombers, dive bombers and fighter planes. This caused widespread destruction and the deaths of 243 people and wounded more than 300 others. Many people fearing invasion headed south. Between February and November 1942 Darwin was bombed 64 times. Other towns in Northern Australia including Broome, Wyndham, Port Headland and Townsville were also bombed in this period
