Help identifying Portuguese medieval coin ?

Hi all,

can anyone out there please help me to identify this coin (apologies, coin is very worn !) ?

The only match for “copper, castle, shield“ under Portugal returned variants of the coin in the link below, but size and weight vary quite a bit from my coin.

N#107072

My coin has a diameter of approx 17.5mm (although clearly incomplete), but the weight is approx 2.8g and depth is 1.5mm, too thick and heavy for a hammered coin. Despite the look of the second picture, it is definitely copper.

Any help would be much appreciated,

many thanks and a happy new year to all,

cheers

A ceitil without a doubt.

All ceitis on Numista are on this search result: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=ceitil&ct=coin

I'm still looking for the exact match but I can already say that it's not Afonso V, ceitis under his name have stars rather than circles around the shield.

After comparing the aspects of the castle on your photo with the castles of the ceitis on the catalog, I would go with this one: N#107218 , of the 4 yearlines pick the third ("shield type 3").

Many thanks, but one thing still puzzles me …. The weight in the catalogue seems a lot lighter than my coin, by nearly 1g …. I got quite a few of the hammered ceitils in the same lot, but this one stood out as a lot thicker and heavier … any ideas ? Thanks

Being hammered coins the weight could vary alot these to my understanding where massproduced and done so undrr numeorus "mints" and under equal varied quality controll

Thanks for the response ….. to me, it still doesn’t have the look or feel of a hammered coin - it looks and feels more like a regular embossed copper coin (1.5mm thick), which makes me think it may be a reproduction / counterfeit , albeit a contemporary one ?
